Protect Work and Information

Don’t forget to back up files regularly and encrypt devices to protect your data. Learn more at Stanford's Information Security Office website.

Built-in backup software can be used to back up to an external hard drive, so take advantage of Time Machine for macOS and Windows Backup for Microsoft Windows. To backup to the cloud, you can use third-party services.

External Hard Drive

It’s advisable to own an external hard drive that’s at least 2 - 4 times larger than your computer's hard drive. They can be found in stores like Amazon or Best Buy for less than $100 and will last for 3 - 5 years or longer.
